![]() ![]() You can hold up to 2 items at a time, although there is no option to switch between them, as rather you have to use them as you acquire them, which can be rather annoying when you don't want to use up a shield for no reason, just to hit the enemy in front of you. Although Mario Kart players may recognise some items from Nintendo's game, the game also includes its own items, such as a set of three barricades walls that random pop up to slow down other racers and a fairy item which when thrown, causes an opponent to float in mid air as they frantically tap O or B to release themselves from its grasp. When I say "exactly like Mario Kart", I mean the age old Mario items are here, including the alien teleporter, banana skin and guided missile, which is surely implemented to attract fans over. ![]() Exactly like Mario Kart, the item boxes give you an assortment of random weapon items, Nitrous boosts and defensive abilities to use to either take out rivals or protect yourself from incoming attacks. When first loading in, you'll be greeted with a short and sweet tutorial, which teaches you the control basics, information on items and how to use them and of course, how to drift. Although currently in its first season with licensed Porsche content, the game already plays like a finely polished title, with incredibly impressive gameplay mechanics and an insane amount of daily content to unlock over several different race types including Speed races, Time Trial, Team battles and even private custom races with 22 tracks to race across. Whilst I make the comparisons, another is the fact, like Mario Kart, Kartrider: Drift aims to appease both single player and multiplayer racing fanatics with an easy to just pick up and play control scheme. Whilst the aforementioned racer is focused more on promoting the IP, Kartrider: Drift is as the name implies, is a more drift focused alternative that just oozes charm. The game has undoubtedly come into its own since the first early play tests in 2020, with so much more content included with this game than any game in the genre, including with what Mario Kart has to offer, if I'm honest. If I have at all given you the impression Kartrider: Drift is nothing but a rip off of a more popular series, think again. Kartrider: Drift however carries the additional added benefit of in-game and console voice chat, which is something many including myself have been asking Nintendo to implement for what feels like an eternity by now. 8 players can do battle across a variety of tracks and race types, either against rival players or AI, with what is essentially Mario Kart gameplay mechanics and items. ![]() As of this week, the game is now out on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5 stores with crossplay and cross-progression support that means you can pick up and continue playing from mobile to your home console without losing your game save, which is incredibly cool. The game has been out for quite some time on PC and mobile storefronts, although apparently for some, this free to play, live service Mario Kart clone has slipped under many a radar. ![]() This past week, we were invited to a press event with Nexon to test out Kartrider: Drift's console release. Obviously, Nintendo's exclusive Mario Kart series is the grand daddy of the genre and it's therefore no surprise that others would attempt to replicate Nintendo's franchise success in some way or another.
